• This breed is on the endangered species list. There are approximately 150 horses in the U.S. and 2, 500 world wide

• The modern Hackney Horse is the most spectacular show-ring harness horse, although it also takes part successfully in competitive driving events at international level

• The breed was derived from the Norfolk and Yorkshire Roadsters and has been exported all over Europe as well as to the Mericas, South Africa and Australia

• The name of the horse probably came from the French word haquenιe, which means a "nag" or gelding. A hackney horse (i.e. without the capital 'H' refers to a riding horse from the Middle Ages

• During the early part of the 19th century, proper roads were under construction. This elegant and fast horse with its trotting gait and endurance was a quick means of transport

• The first Hackney is said to be Shale's Horse, foaled in 1760

• The first Hackney pony imported to America was 239 Stella, brought to Philadelphia by A.J. Cossatt in 1878.

• In 1891 Cossatt and other Hackney enthusiasts founded the American Hackney Horse Society

• The Hackney Pony (brown, black, gray, roan, white markings) was created by crossing the Hackney Horse with Fell mares. The Hackney contribution to the gene pool was speed and grace, the Fell's, power and high knee action

• Unique to the Hackney breed (horse and pony) is their high, ground covering knee action – foreleg raised up and thrown forward in an extravagant movement

• Until beginning of 20th century Hackney ponies were used by tradesmen to pull delivery vehicles

• The Hackney Horse has a small head with small muzzle and ears but large eyes

• The horse has a long, graceful neck and a compact body and deep chest

• The horse has short legs, strong hocks and a high set tail

• Their coat is fine and silky

• The Hackney Horse is alert and courageous

• This warm blooded horse stands at around 15.3 hands high

• The Hackney Pony (who shares its stud book with the Hackney Horse) is full of courage and has great stamina. It is a very elegant pony standing at between 12.2 and 14 hands high
