• Also known as Avelignese (Italian) • This pony orignated from Tyrol, Austria and is distinguished by its strking chestnut or palomino colouring, accompanied by a flaxen mane or tail • The centre of the Haflinger breeding is the village of Hafling in the Etschlander Mountains in Austria. The principal stud is at Jenesien • The pony is cold blooded, but has an Arab foundation sire, El Bedavi XXII • The breed is a mountain pony, reared on the high alpine pastures and therefore works easily on these steep slops • The pony has many uses - it is ridden, used in forestry work and will draw a sleigh or wheeled vehicles • This strong, hardy breed are known to live to an old age - despite not working until 4 years old, they are still active at 40 years • The pony has an expressive head with large eyes, wide nostrils and small ears • The body is long and loins are strong • Legs are strong and hooves are hard • A hard working pony with great strength and a calm docile attitude • The pony stands ar arounf 13.3 hands high
