• The Kerry Bog Pony is a rare breed • Not long ago, this pony was nearly extinct. By 1994 there were only 20 ponies left in the whole of Ireland • It is often known as Ireland's 'Heritage Pony' • These ponies were bred in the 17th century to help work on the peatlands by moving the cut turf to drying areas • They were also used to bring seaweed from the shore for use as a crop fertiliser and even to transport their owners short distances • The ponies stand at around 10 to 11.1 hands high • They are chestnut, dark bay or grey in colour and have a distinctive dish shaped faces similar to that of an Arab breed • This pony is very strong and resilient
