• The Kerry Bog Pony is a rare breed

• Not long ago, this pony was nearly extinct. By 1994 there were only 20 ponies left in the whole of Ireland

• It is often known as Ireland's 'Heritage Pony'

• These ponies were bred in the 17th century to help work on the peatlands by moving the cut turf to drying areas

• They were also used to bring seaweed from the shore for use as a crop fertiliser and even to transport their owners short distances

The ponies stand at around 10 to 11.1 hands high

They are chestnut, dark bay or grey in colour and have a distinctive dish shaped faces similar to that of an Arab breed

• This pony is very strong and resilient
