• The first American breed founded from a single warmblood stallion named Figure (foaled Massachuetts 1789)

• Figure eventually came to be named after one of his owners - Justin Morgan of Vermont

• Figures's ancestry is uncertain, but it's thought his family tree is a combination of Welsh Cob, Thoroughbred, Harddraver, Fjord and native Arab/Barb stock

• The re-named horse shone in saddle and harness racing events and at pulling heavy weight. He was also a good riding and ranch horse

• Demand for him as a sire grew

• He consistently threw spectacular foals that reflected his size, conformation and character

• When Justin Morgan (horse) died in 1821, a totally new breed had been created

• During the 19th century, the Morgan was used in the foundation of the Standardbred, Saddlebred and Tennessee Walking Horse

• The head of the Morgan, is medium in size with a slightly concave face and thick neck

• The chest is deep and shoulders are strong

• The tail is set high and the legs are set square, short and strong

• The mane and tail are full

• A good natured, hard working, active horse who is tough, even tempered and loyal

• Mostly bay, brown, black, chestnut with white makings

• Height 14.1 - 15.2 hands high

• Morgan's are used for riding, ranch work, harness work, pleasure, endurance, show, hunting, dressage and trail
