Also known as East Prussian Horse, and is sometimes spelled Traekehner Originally from East Prussia, now part of Poland Developed at the Trakehnen stud set up in 1732 Founded by Frederick William I of Prussia to produce couch and cavalry horses This breed badly depleted during World War II Winter 1945 approximately 1,000 Trakehner mares and stallions travelled west with refugees fleeing the Russians These horses re-established the breed in West Germany Trakehners left behind in Poland were used to create the Wiekopolski This breed has an elegant head, long neck and prominent withers The chest is deep The hindquarters are rounded and the legs are slender legs with good feet A high spirited, courageous and lively horse This horse stands between 16 and 17.2 hands high Popular Uses: General riding and competition. Many consider this horse to be Europe's finest warmblood and the ideal competition
