European Green Toad General Info: Adult length up to 6". The more
plants and secluded areas within terrariums the better. Frogs and toads
have sensitive skin and generally would rather not be handled. If handling
is desired, it is important to wash hands before and after handling. Most
toads have a gland behind each eye that secretes a toxin when threatened.
Temperature/Humidity: Ideal daytime temperature for European green
toads should range between 75 and 85 degrees. Nighttime temperature should
remain between 65 and 75 degrees. The humidity for these amphibians should
be kept at or near 50 percent. Lighting: Toads may benefit from the use
of ultraviolet lighting to maintain good health. Ultraviolet lighting
is recommended for 12 hours per day. A timer is recommended to maintain
a consistent lighting schedule.
Feeding/Watering: These toads do well on a diet consisting of a variety
of vitamin/calcium dusted insects such as small crickets, mealworms, waxworms,
and small subterranean worms such as red wigglers. Fresh clean water should
always be available in the form of a shallow bowl for soaking. Adult toads
should be fed 3-4 times per week. Juveniles can be fed daily.
Habitat/Housing: Successful permanent maintenance requires at least
a 10 gallon terrarium. A screen lid is essential for proper air exchange.
Live plants may be used in toad enclosures to maintain humidity levels
and create a natural atmosphere. Misting the habitat once or twice daily
will help maintain proper humidity levels. Substrate
(Bedding): 2" to 3" inches of Bed-A-Beast is recommended for "toad-ariums"
to maintain proper humidity levels. The substrate should be kept moist,
but changed regularly to avoid bacterial growth.
