Mantella Frogs
Temperature/Humidity: Ideal daytime temperature for mantellas should
range between 75ºF and 80ºF. Nighttime temperature should remain between
65ºF and 75ºF. The humidity for these frogs should be kept at or near
80 percent. Lighting: Since mantellas are diurnal (mainly active during
the day) ultraviolet lighting is recommended to maintain good health.
Ultraviolet lighting is recommended for 12 hours per day. The use of a
timer will help in maintaining an accurate lighting schedule.
Feeding/Watering: Mantellas do well on a diet consisting of a variety
of vitamin/calcium dusted insects such as 1/8 inch crickets. Additional
insects that can be fed include, but are not limited to: springtails,
wingless fruitflies, and termites. Fresh clean water should always be
available in the form of a shallow bowl for soaking. Adult frogs should
be fed 3-4 times per week. Juveniles can be fed daily.
Habitat/Housing: Successful permanent maintenance requires at least
a 10 gallon terrarium. A screen lid is essential for proper air exchange.
Live plants can be used in mantella enclosures to maintain humidity levels
and create a natural atmosphere. It is important to include several hiding
areas to reduce stress. Misting the habitat once or twice daily will help
maintain proper humidity levels. Substrate
(Bedding): 2" to 3" inches of Bed-A-Beast and moss is recommended
for mantella terrariums to maintain proper humidity levels. The substrate
should be kept moist, but changed regularly to avoid bacterial growth.
General info: The more plants and secluded areas within terrariums
the better. Frogs have sensitive skin and generally would rather not be
handled. Most wild mantellas have toxins in their skin for protection
from predators. If handling is desired, it is important to wash hands
before and after handling. Children should not handle mantellas. Size:
Adult length up to 1"
