· Lovebirds are members of the parrot family

· There are nine different species

· Lovebirds acquired their name because of their fondness for sitting in pairs preening each other's feathers

· They can be kept singly but they are social birds and you will need to give it the attention it would otherwise get from a partner

· Lovebirds are affectionate and intelligent

· They are chatty, singing and whistling all day long and are particularly vocal at dawn and dusk. They are not known for their talking ability but their song is most pleasant

· They can live for between 15 and 40 years

· Lovebirds eat a variety of seeds, fruits, berries and vegetables. All fruits and vegetables must be washed thoroughly and be cut into manageable pieces. Water, cuttlebone and mineral block should always be available. Listed below are some suggested foods:
