Millipedes make good pets and are relatively easy to keep. Most
millipedes have between 200 and 300 legs, although some species can
have more than 700! To count your millipedes leg, count the body segments,
multiply by 2 then subtract 6 They should be housed in a small plastic aquarium, fitted with a well-ventilated lid. The base should be covered with bark chippings or dead leaves, with one or two pieces of larger bark to create hiding places. The cage should be lightly sprayed every day or two, taking care that it does not become too damp. Giant millipedes come from warm parts of the world and require supplementary heating, unless they are housed in a room maintained at a minimum temperature of 68-77F. Millipedes are scavengers that eat a wide range or organic material. Small pieces of fruit are a good source of food, but remove these after one or two days and replace with something fresh. Supply a variety of food to keep them healthy. Some species of Giant Millipedes can produce toxic or irritant secretions when upset, ALWAYS wash your hands after handling them |
