If considering a snake as a pet, choose a non-venomous species, one whose size you can afford to house.

The cage should be at least equal to the length of the snake. There should be room for water for drinking and for occasional bathing. If a warming light or heater is provided, then also a shaded or cool area must be available.

When handling a snake always treat it with humane and thoughtful care, treat it gently but firmly so that in turn, it will become docile. When you grasp a snake, try for a firm, gentle grasp immediately behind its head, you should support its body with your other hand, never lift a snake by its tail.

When you enter a room where a snake is caged, don't slam the door or bang on the cage and avoid flashing a light if your snake is in the dark.

Snakes will not eat grain, vegetables or fruit, a snake should be fed on animal food. Their digestive system is designed to handle shells, scales, bones, hair and feathers. They should be fed on whole organisms such as whole fish, whole rodents and whole insects.
